Sizing Your Catcher’s Equipment

Basic Components of Catcher’s Equipment
Catching demands a lot. You have to present a proper target for the pitcher, flow seamlessly through multiple stances, block pitches in the dirt and keep track of potential base-stealers, all while maintaining control of pitch selection and the game itself. With all this on your plate, it’s crucial that you are equipped with the right gear. Catcher’s equipment can be purchased piece by piece or in a complete all-in-one set. Though manufacturers may vary slightly in how they assign age level (Adult, Intermediate, Junior, Senior, etc), the true measurement number should be your most accurate guide. Refer to the product page details for specific sizing guidelines.

Chest Protector
Measure from the base of your neck to your waist to determine your size. So, if you measure 14″ or 13.5″, you’ll want to look for no smaller than a size 14″ chest protector. When the back straps are adjusted correctly, a catcher’s chest protector should be tight enough to cover the collarbone, but not loose enough that it rises into the chin when squatting down prior to receiving a pitch.

Leg Guards
Catcher’s leg guard sizes range from 13″ to 17.5″ when measured from the middle of the knee to the top of the ankle. Like chest protectors, that measurement will match the size of leg guard you should purchase. Properly sized and adjusted catcher’s leg guards will have a snug (but not too tight) fit around the legs.

Headgear
Youth and adult helmets and masks are designed to be one-size-fits-all, since there are straps in the back which you can loosen or tighten for a better fit. Helmets and masks labeled Youth are designed to fit players 12 and younger, while headgear marked Adult is intended for players 13 and older
